THINGS TO SEE & DO

Coober Pedy is situated in the outback of South Australia, 850km north of Adelaide and 690km south of Alice Springs. The township offers all the facilities expected in a large country town, including shops and restaurants. The town is surrounded by a moon type landscape dotted with shafts and mullock heaps from mining activities, with opal workings extending for nearly 40km around the town.

KANKU- BREAKAWAYS

Located just 32km north of Coober Pedy, the heritage-listed Kanku–Breakaways Conservation Park should not be missed! One of the highlights of our popular Coober Pedy Outback Bus Tours, you will soon see why, when you take in the breathtaking views of these colourful low hills.

The Kanku–Breakaways Conservation Park is Aboriginal owned and covers almost 15,000 hectares. Permits must be purchased to visit this icon of the outback. Or if you are a guest on our Coober Pedy Outback Bus Tour, then you entrance fee is covered.

HISTORICAL COOBER PEDY

Coober Pedy has an interesting history dating back to when opal was first discovered in 1915. Our volunteer-run Historical Society has an extensive collection of memorabilia, but you can also see some of our unique history by visiting sites around town. BIG WINCH LOOKOUT

The Big Winch Lookout Coober Pedy is a free attraction with good views over town. Built in the 1970’s to celebrate Coober Pedy being the Opal Capital of the World, this 8 metre tall structure was later destroyed by fire and then rebuilt in 1986.

There is also a tree made out of scrap iron called “The First Tree in Coober Pedy” by artist Klaus Wirris.

It’s a great spot for sunset views, easy to find and you can drive right up to the top.

SEE THE WORLD’S LONGEST FENCE!

Marvel at the longest fence in the world, the Dingo or Dog Fence, and you can see a section of this 5,600 km barrier near the Kanku-Breakaways, 15km from Coober Pedy. Built in 1885 to protect the sheep in the southern states, by keeping out dingoes and other wild dogs. Originally 8,614 km long, it was shortened in the 1980’s. This phenomenal fence spans from Queensland in the north-east to the Great Australian Bight in South Australia in the south to protect the south-eastern farms.

Protection measures against dingoes by this fence, include a height of up to 2 metres and it extends 30 cm into the ground to prevent digging underneath. Other measures along the fence include lighting and poison bait traps. 

It certainly is a man-made wonder and you can see it on our Coober Pedy Outback Bus Tour (runs seasonally) or if you take a self-drive tour to the Kanku-Breakaways.

PLAY GOLF IN THE OUTBACK

Operating since 1976, Coober Pedy Opal Fields Golf Club, has been voted in the top 10 most unique golf courses in the world, with white fairways and black putting greens! There is no grass on this unique course, that traverses the rocks and scrub. The tees are topped with artificial turf, the fairways are covered with local white sandstone and the greens are called scrapes and are a mixture of local quarry dust mixed with waste oil, making a suitable surface for putting.
 
Expanded to a full 18 holes in 1996, the extensions were designed by professional golfer Dennis Ingram. There are even special local rule called “rock relief”!
